How to Care for Porcelain Teaware: A Gentle Cleaning Guide
A little care between tea sessions helps keep porcelain teaware clean and ready for the next brew. The most useful routine is simple: let the piece cool, wash gently, dry fully and store it where the rim and lid are protected.
Start with the care instructions
Always follow the instructions supplied with your individual cup, gaiwan or teapot. Porcelain pieces can have different glazes, decoration and construction. The word porcelain alone does not confirm that an item is safe for a dishwasher, microwave or oven.
If those uses are not expressly confirmed on the product page or packaging, ask before trying them. Gold-colored decoration and crackle-style finishes need particular attention to the maker's instructions rather than a general assumption about porcelain.
Wash gently after use
Allow hot teaware to cool before washing. Avoid moving a hot vessel straight into cold water or pouring boiling water into a very cold piece. Sudden temperature changes can put stress on ceramic materials.
For routine hand washing, use lukewarm water, a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid and a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge. Clean the inside, rim and base, then rinse away soap thoroughly. Handle lids separately so they do not knock against the bowl or sink.
Do not force a brush or hard tool into a narrow spout. Choose a soft tool that fits comfortably, and avoid pushing against delicate edges.
Handle tea marks with care
Rinse soon after the piece has cooled so tea does not sit inside for long periods. If a mark remains, repeat gentle washing and consult the care instructions before using a specialist cleaner.
Avoid abrasive powders, steel wool, harsh cleaners and improvised chemical mixtures. They can affect decoration or the surface. Do not use a treatment just because it worked on a different piece of pottery.
Crackle-style glazing may show a network of fine lines as part of the finish. That appearance is different from a new structural crack, chipped rim or damaged handle; ask for guidance if you cannot tell which you are seeing.
Dry and store separate pieces
Let the inside dry fully before replacing a lid or placing the piece in a closed cupboard. Use a soft towel carefully, especially around narrow rims and handles. Store lids securely so they cannot slide off.
If you stack cups or bowls, avoid loading weight onto delicate edges and use a soft separator where appropriate. Keep frequently used pieces within easy reach to reduce accidental knocks.
Know when to stop using a piece
Inspect a piece after a drop or impact. Stop using it if you see a structural crack, a loose handle, a sharp chip or another change that could make handling hot tea unsafe.
